The Rotomoulding Procedure in Detail

1. Mold preparation.
A fixed quantity of polymer in grain form is packed into a hollow mould. The mould is usually made from cast aluminium or sheet steel material. The coloration needed for the finished item is pre compounded into the polymer. The most typically used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this design of plastic manufacturing.

Preheating of the oven starts, and it can be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is warmed to temperatures between 500-700F. The mold with the powdered polymer is then secured and positioned inside the oven.

2. The heating and fusion procedure.
Once placed into the oven, the mould is revolved on two axis so the powdered polymer liquefies from the heat and coats the inside if the mould. The spinning is done slowly, about 20 revolutions per min. The main thing that is essential at this moment is the period of time the mould will spend within the oven. If it overstays, the material will lose stability and durability, generating a poor product. If it is extracted from the oven prematurely, the polymer will not have flowed correctly, which develops bubbles in the finished item.

3. Mould cooling.
When the material has sufficiently spent the right amount of time in the oven, it is then taken out for cooling. This may be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which generates a cool mist. When the component cools, it reduces somewhat for ease of extraction from the mould. This is yet another procedure that relies a lot on the right timing, since rapid cooling decreases the material too fast, causing bending of the product.

4. The removing or de-moulding step.
As soon as the product within te mould has cooled correctly, the person managing the process can then take out the finished item from the mould. The technique is repeated from the start, supplying a number of similar items.
