The Rotomolding Procedure in Detail

1. Mold prep work.
A predetermined quantity of polymer in particle form is filled into a hollow mold. The mold is usually constructed from cast aluminium or sheet steel component. The most generally used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this type of plastic manufacturing.

Preheating of the oven follows, and it can be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is heated to temperatures between 500-700F. The mold with the powdered polymer is then locked and placed within the oven.

2. The heating and fusion process.
Once inside the oven, the mould is spun on two axis so the powdered polymer liquefies from the heat and overlays the inside if the mold. The rotation is done slowly, about 20 revolutions per sixty seconds. One thing that is essential at this moment is the period of time the mold will spend within the oven. If it overstays, the material will lose stability and strength, generating a weak item. If it is taken out from the oven too early, the polymer will not have flowed properly, which produces bubbles in the finished product line.

3. Mold cooling down.
When the material has sufficiently spent the right amount of time in the oven, it is then extracted for cooling. This may be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which a cool mist. When the component cools, it reduces a little for ease of removal from the mould. This is another step that depends a lot on the correct timing, since rapid cooling shrinks the material too quick, causing bending of the item.

4. The unloading or de-moulding phase.
Once the material inside te mold has cooled successfully, the person taking care of the process can then take out the finalized product from the mold. The procedure is repeated from the start, supplying a number of identical product lines.
