The Rotomoulding Method in Detail

1. Mould fitting.
A fixed volume of polymer in powder form is packed into a hollow mold. The mould is usually built from cast aluminium or sheet steel component. The most typically used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this format of plastic manufacturing.

Preheating of the oven follows, and it may be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is heated up to temperatures between 500-700F. The mould with the powdered polymer is then locked and installed inside the oven.

2. The heat and fusion process.
Once inside the oven, the mold is revolved on two axis so the powdered polymer liquefies from the heat and overlays the inside if the mould. The rotation is done slowly and gradually, about 20 rotations per minute. One thing that is critical at this point is the period of time the mold will spend within the oven. If it stays to long, the component will lose value and durability, creating a faulty item. If it is extracted from the oven prematurely, the polymer will not have flowed correctly, which produces bubbles in the finished product.

3. Mold cooling.
When the material has completely spent the correct amount of time in the oven, it is then removed for cooling. This can be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which a cool mist. When the material cools, it shrinks slightly for ease of removal from the mould. This is one more measure that depends a lot on the right timing, since quick cooling shrinks the material too fast, causing bending of the product.

4. The removing or de-molding step.
When the product inside te mold has cooled correctly, the molder handling the operation can then remove the finalized product from the mold. The technique is repeated from the beginning, supplying a series of similar product lines.
