The Roto-Molding Method in Detail

1. Mold preparation.
A predetermined amount of polymer in particle form is loaded into a hollow mould. The mold is usually comprised of cast aluminium or sheet steel substance. The coloring chosen for the finished product is pre compounded into the polymer. The most typically used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this design of plastic production.

Pre-heating of the oven starts, and it can be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is heated to temperatures between 500-700F. The mold with the powdered polymer is then locked and inserted within the oven.

2. The heating and fusion process.
Once within the oven, the mold is rotated on two axis so the powdered polymer melts from the heat and layers the inside if the mold. The spinning is done slowly, about 20 rotations per minute. The main thing that is important at this moment is the amount of time the mould will spend within the oven. If it stays to long, the material will lose stability and strength, creating a faulty item. If it is taken out from the oven prematurely, the polymer will not have flowed properly, which generates bubbles in the finished item.

3. Mold cooling down.
When the product has completely spent the correct amount of time in the oven, it is then taken out for cooling. This can be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which a cool mist. When the product cools, it shrinks a little for ease of extraction from the mould. This is another procedure that depends upon a lot on the correct timing, since quick cooling decreases the material too fast, causing bending of the product.

4. The offloading or de-moulding step.
As soon as the material inside te mold has cooled adequately, the person managing the process can then take out the completed product from the mould. The process is repeated from the beginning, supplying a series of exact products.
