The Rotomoulding Process Components

This molding procedure has been used since earlier times for creatingvseverl product lines. Egyptians for instance, applied rotational molding solutions in the manufacturing of ceramics. The Swiss were also applying this rotation format to create hollow chocolate eggs. Some plastic product lines in the USA were made utilizing this technique some time between 1940 and 1950. The process has however taken long to take affect because it was thought of to be a moderately slow process

1. Mold preparation.
A fixed quantity of polymer in particle form is packed into a hollow mould. The mold is usually composeded of cast aluminium or sheet steel material. The color tone wanted for the final item is pre compounded into the polymer. The most commonly used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this type of plastic production.

Pre-heating of the oven follows, and it may be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is heated up to temperatures between 500-700F. The mold with the powdered polymer is then secured and placed inside the oven.

2. The heat and fusion phase.
Once inside the oven, the mold is rotated on two axis so the powdered polymer liquefies from the heat and coats the inside if the mold. The rotation is done slowly, about 20 spins per sixty seconds. The main thing that is vital at this point is the amount of time the mould will spend inside the oven. If it overstays, the material will lose stability and durability, making a weak item. If it is extracted from the oven too early, the polymer will not have flowed properly, which develops bubbles in the completed product line.

3. Mould cooling.
When the product has completely spent the enough of time in the oven, it is then extracted for cooling. This may be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which a cool mist. When the product cools, it shrinks somewhat for ease of extraction from the mold. This is one more step that depends a lot on the correct timing, since quick cooling shrinks the material too quickly, causing bending of the item.

4. The removing or de-molding step.
Once the component inside te mold has cooled adequately, the molder handling the process can then remove the finalized item from the mould. The process is repeated from the beginning, giving a series of similar products.
