The Roto-Molding Process Components

This molding method has been used since early times for creatingvseverl items. Egyptians for example, worked with rotational molding procedures in the producing of ceramics. 1. Mold fitting.
A predetermined amount of polymer in grain form is filled into a hollow mould. The mould is usually made from cast aluminium or sheet steel component. The colour wanted for the final goods is pre compounded into the polymer. The most typically used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this type of plastic engineering.

Preheating of the oven starts, and it may be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is heated up to temperatures between 500-700F. The mould with the powdered polymer is then sealed and placed into the oven.

2. The heating and fusion phase.
Once placed into the oven, the mould is rotated on two axis so the powdered polymer liquefies from the heat and coats the inside if the mould. The rotation is done slowly, about 20 spins per minute. One thing that is critical at this point is the amount of time the mold will spend inside the oven. If it overstays, the material will lose value and durability, making a weak product. If it is taken out from the oven too early, the polymer will not have melted properly, which produces bubbles in the finalized item.

3. Mould cooling.
When the component has sufficiently spent the enough of time in the oven, it is then extracted for cooling. This can be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which a cool mist. When the material cools, it reduces somewhat for ease of removal from the mold. This is one more step that depends upon a lot on the correct timing, since rapid cooling reduces the material too quickly, causing warping of the item.

4. The un-loading or de-moulding step.
Once the product inside te mould has cooled effectively, the person managing the operation can then extract the finished product from the mold. The process is repeated from the beginning, providing a number of identical products.
