The Roto-Molding Method in Detail

This molding process has been used since ancient times for creatingvseverl product lines. Egyptians as an example, used roto-molding procedures in the creating of ceramics. 1. Mould readying.
A fixed amount of polymer in particle form is filled into a hollow mould. The mould is usually made of cast aluminium or sheet steel component. The color tone intended for the end item is pre compounded into the polymer. The most typically used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this type of plastic production.

Pre-heating of the oven starts, and it may be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is warmed to temperatures between 500-700F. The mould with the powdered polymer is then sealed and placed inside the oven.

2. The heat and fusion phase.
Once inside the oven, the mould is rotated on two axis so the powdered polymer melts from the heat and layers the inside if the mold. The spinning is done slowly, about 20 revolutions per minute. The main thing that is critical at this moment is the amount of time the mould will spend within the oven. If it stays to long, the material will lose stability and strength, generating a weak item. If it is extracted from the oven prematurely, the polymer will not have flowed properly, which creates bubbles in the finalized product.

3. Mould cooling down.
When the material has sufficiently spent the enough of time in the oven, it is then removed for cooling. This may be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which creates a cool mist. When the component cools, it shrinks somewhat for ease of removal from the mould. This is yet another measure that depends a lot on the correct timing, since quick cooling decreases the material too quickly, causing warping of the product.

4. The discharging or de-molding phase.
When the material within te mold has cooled correctly, the molder managing the procedure can then take out the finalized item from the mould. The process is repeated from the start, supplying a number of identical items.
