The Rotomoulding Process in Detail

1. Mold readying.
A predetermined measure of polymer in powder form is packed into a hollow mould. The mold is usually made of cast aluminium or sheet steel component. Pre-heating of the oven starts, and it can be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is heated up to temperatures between 500-700F. The mold with the powdered polymer is then secured and installed inside the oven.
2. The heating and fusion process.
Once inside the oven, the mould is spun on two axis so the powdered polymer melts from the heat and overlays the inside if the mold. The turning is done gradually, about 20 spins per minute. One thing that is vital at this moment is the amount of time the mold will spend within the oven. If it overstays, the material will lose stability and durability, creating a weak product. If it is removed from the oven prematurely, the polymer will not have liquefied properly, which creates bubbles in the finished product line.
3. Mold cooling.
When the product has completely spent the enough of time in the oven, it is then taken out for cooling. This can be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which generates a cool mist. When the component cools, it reduces a little for ease of removal from the mould. This is an additional measure that depends upon a lot on the correct timing, since quick cooling shrinks the material too rapidly, causing warping of the item.
4. The discharging or de-molding step.
As soon as the material within te mould has cooled successfully, the molder handling the process can then extract the finalized item from the mold. The process is repeated from the beginning, making a number of similar items.
