The Rotomoulding Process Components

1. Mould fitting.
A predetermined measure of polymer in grain form is packed into a hollow mould. The mold is usually made from cast aluminium or sheet steel material. The most typically used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this style of plastic engineering.

Pre-heating of the oven starts, and it may be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is warmed to temperatures between 500-700F. The mould with the powdered polymer is then secured and positioned into the oven.

2. The heat and fusion process.
Once placed into the oven, the mold is turned on two axis so the powdered polymer melts from the heat and coats the inside if the mold. The spinning is done slowly and gradually, about 20 revolutions per min. One thing that is critical at this moment is the period of time the mould will spend inside the oven. If it overstays, the material will lose stability and strength, making a poor product. If it is taken out from the oven prematurely, the polymer will not have flowed correctly, which produces bubbles in the finalized item.

3. Mould cooling down.
When the product has completely spent the right amount of time in the oven, it is then extracted for cooling. This can be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which generates a cool mist. When the material cools, it shrinks slightly for ease of removal from the mold. This is another procedure that depends upon a lot on the correct timing, since quick cooling reduces the material too fast, causing bending of the product.

4. The offloading or de-molding step.
Once the product inside te mold has cooled properly, the molder taking care of the procedure can then remove the finished product from the mold. The function is repeated from the start, providing a number of exact items.
