The Rotomolding Method in Detail

1. Mould readying.
A fixed volume of polymer in particle form is loaded into a hollow mould. The mould is usually built from cast aluminium or sheet steel component. The most often used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this style of plastic production.

Preheating of the oven starts, and it can be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is heated up to temperatures between 500-700F. The mold with the powdered polymer is then secured and inserted into the oven.

2. The heating and fusion procedure.
Once inside the oven, the mold is rotated on two axis so the powdered polymer liquefies from the heat and overlays the inside if the mold. The rotation is done slowly, about 20 rotations per min. The main thing that is critical at this point is the period of time the mould will spend within the oven. If it overstays, the material will lose stability and strength, creating a weak item. If it is extracted from the oven prematurely, the polymer will not have flowed correctly, which creates bubbles in the finished product.

3. Mould cooling.
When the material has completely spent the enough of time in the oven, it is then taken out for cooling. This may be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which creates a cool mist. When the material cools, it shrinks somewhat for ease of removal from the mould. This is one more step that depends upon a lot on the ideal timing, since rapid cooling reduces the material too fast, causing bending of the material.

4. The un-loading or de-molding step.
Once the product inside te mold has cooled effectively, the person handling the procedure can then extract the completed product from the mold. The function is repeated from the beginning, providing a number of similar items.
