The Rotomoulding Procedure in Detail

1. Mold prep work.
A fixed amount of polymer in grain form is filled into a hollow mould. The mould is usually constructed from cast aluminium or sheet steel material. 2. The heating and fusion phase.
Once placed into the oven, the mold is rotated on two axis so the powdered polymer melts from the heat and overlays the inside if the mould. The turning is done slowly, about 20 rotations per min. One thing that is important at this moment is the period of time the mould will spend inside the oven. If it stays to long, the material will lose value and strength, producing a faulty product. If it is removed from the oven prematurely, the polymer will not have flowed correctly, which creates bubbles in the finished item.

3. Mould cooling.
When the product has completely spent the correct amount of time in the oven, it is then extracted for cooling. This can be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which creates a cool mist. When the material cools, it reduces a little for ease of removal from the mould. This is one more step that depends upon a lot on the ideal timing, since quick cooling reduces the material too quick, causing bending of the item.

4. The unloading or de-moulding step.
When the component within te mold has cooled successfully, the person taking care of the procedure can then take out the finished product from the mould. The technique is repeated from the beginning, making a number of identical products.
