The Rotomolding Method in Detail

1. Mould preparation.
A fixed volume of polymer in grain form is loaded into a hollow mold. The mold is usually constructed from cast aluminium or sheet steel component. The most typically used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this format of plastic engineering.

Preheating of the oven follows, and it can be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is warmed to temperatures between 500-700F. The mold with the powdered polymer is then secured and placed within the oven.

2. The heating up and fusion process.
Once within the oven, the mold is revolved on two axis so the powdered polymer liquefies from the heat and overlays the inside if the mold. The rotation is done gradually, about 20 spins per min. Something that is essential at this moment is the amount of time the mould will spend within the oven. If it stays to long, the material will lose value and durability, creating a poor product. If it is taken out from the oven prematurely, the polymer will not have melted properly, which generates bubbles in the finalized product.

3. Mold cooling down.
When the component has completely spent the correct amount of time in the oven, it is then extracted for cooling. This may be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which a cool mist. When the material cools, it reduces a little for ease of extraction from the mold. This is yet another measure that relies a lot on the correct timing, since rapid cooling shrinks the material too rapidly, causing warping of the item.

4. The unloading or de-moulding phase.
Once the product inside te mould has cooled properly, the molder taking care of the procedure can then extract the finalized item from the mould. The function is repeated from the beginning, supplying a number of similar product lines.
