The Rotomoulding Method in Detail

This moulding technique has been used since earlier times for creatingvseverl products. Egyptians as an example, employed rotational molding systems in the manufacturing of ceramics. 1. Mould readying.
A predetermined volume of polymer in particle form is loaded into a hollow mould. The mould is usually comprised of cast aluminium or sheet steel component. The colour needed for the end goods is pre compounded into the polymer. The most generally used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this design of plastic engineering.

Pre-heating of the oven starts, and it may be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is warmed to temperatures between 500-700F. The mold with the powdered polymer is then sealed and installed within the oven.

2. The heating and fusion procedure.
Once within the oven, the mold is revolved on two axis so the powdered polymer melts from the heat and coats the inside if the mold. The turning is done slowly, about 20 spins per minute. Something that is critical at this point is the amount of time the mould will spend within the oven. If it stays to long, the component will lose stability and strength, making a poor product. If it is removed from the oven prematurely, the polymer will not have melted properly, which develops bubbles in the completed product line.

3. Mold cooling.
When the component has sufficiently spent the correct amount of time in the oven, it is then extracted for cooling. This can be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which creates a cool mist. When the material cools, it shrinks slightly for ease of extraction from the mould. This is one more step that depends upon a lot on the ideal timing, since rapid cooling shrinks the material too rapidly, causing warping of the material.

4. The removing or de-moulding step.
When the component within te mold has cooled successfully, the person taking care of the process can then take out the completed item from the mould. The function is repeated from the beginning, providing a number of similar product lines.
