The Roto-Molding Process Components

1. Mold preparation.
A fixed quantity of polymer in grain form is packed into a hollow mould. The mould is usually comprised of cast aluminium or sheet steel substance. The color tone preferred for the finished product is pre compounded into the polymer. The most generally used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this type of plastic production.

Pre-heating of the oven starts, and it may be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is heated to temperatures between 500-700F. The mould with the powdered polymer is then locked and inserted into the oven.

2. The heating and fusion procedure.
Once placed into the oven, the mould is revolved on two axis so the powdered polymer melts from the heat and layers the inside if the mould. The turning is done gradually, about 20 spins per min. Something that is essential at this moment is the amount of time the mold will spend inside the oven. If it overstays, the component will lose value and durability, producing a poor product. If it is taken out from the oven too early, the polymer will not have flowed correctly, which creates bubbles in the finished item.

3. Mold cooling down.
When the product has completely spent the correct amount of time in the oven, it is then removed for cooling. This may be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which generates a cool mist. When the material cools, it reduces somewhat for ease of removal from the mold. This is another measure that depends upon a lot on the correct timing, since rapid cooling decreases the material too quickly, causing warping of the item.

4. The removing or de-moulding phase.
Once the product inside te mould has cooled successfully, the person taking care of the process can then extract the finalized product from the mold. The function is repeated from the beginning, giving a series of similar product lines.
