The Rotomoulding Method in Detail

1. Mold fitting.
A predetermined amount of polymer in grain form is packed into a hollow mold. The mold is usually crafted from cast aluminium or sheet steel substance. The coloring chosen for the finished item is pre compounded into the polymer. The most generally used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this type of plastic production.

Pre-heating of the oven starts, and it may be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is warmed to temperatures between 500-700F. The mould with the powdered polymer is then secured and put within the oven.

2. The heat and fusion step.
Once within the oven, the mold is turned on two axis so the powdered polymer melts from the heat and overlays the inside if the mold. The rotation is done slowly, about 20 revolutions per minute. Something that is critical at this point is the period of time the mould will spend within the oven. If it stays to long, the component will lose stability and strength, making a weak product. If it is taken out from the oven too early, the polymer will not have liquefied correctly, which produces bubbles in the finished product.

3. Mold cooling down.
When the component has sufficiently spent the right amount of time in the oven, it is then taken out for cooling. This can be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which generates a cool mist. When the component cools, it shrinks slightly for ease of extraction from the mold. This is one more step that depends upon a lot on the ideal timing, since rapid cooling shrinks the material too rapidly, causing bending of the item.

4. The unloading or de-moulding step.
Once the component within te mould has cooled effectively, the molder managing the process can then extract the completed product from the mould. The process is repeated from the start, making a number of exact product lines.
