The Roto-Molding Procedure Components

1. Mold prep work.
A fixed quantity of polymer in particle form is loaded into a hollow mold. The mold is usually constructed from cast aluminium or sheet steel component. The color tone desired for the end product is pre compounded into the polymer. The most typically used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this format of plastic engineering.

Preheating of the oven starts, and it may be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is heated to temperatures between 500-700F. The mould with the powdered polymer is then sealed and installed inside the oven.

2. The heating and fusion phase.
Once inside the oven, the mold is revolved on two axis so the powdered polymer melts from the heat and overlays the inside if the mould. The rotation is done slowly, about 20 rotations per minute. One thing that is critical at this point is the period of time the mould will spend inside the oven. If it stays to long, the product will lose value and strength, making a poor product. If it is extracted from the oven too early, the polymer will not have melted properly, which generates bubbles in the finalized item.

3. Mold cooling.
When the component has sufficiently spent the correct amount of time in the oven, it is then extracted for cooling. This can be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which generates a cool mist. When the product cools, it shrinks slightly for ease of removal from the mold. This is one more measure that depends upon a lot on the correct timing, since quick cooling reduces the material too rapidly, causing bending of the material.

4. The offloading or de-molding phase.
Once the component within te mold has cooled correctly, the person taking care of the operation can then take out the finalized product from the mold. The function is repeated from the start, supplying a series of identical items.
