The Rotomolding Procedure in Detail

1. Mold fitting.
A predetermined quantity of polymer in particle form is filled into a hollow mold. The mold is usually built from cast aluminium or sheet steel component. The coloration needed for the finished goods is pre compounded into the polymer. The most often used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this design of plastic manufacturing.

Preheating of the oven starts, and it may be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is heated up to temperatures between 500-700F. The mould with the powdered polymer is then sealed and put inside the oven.

2. The heat and fusion process.
Once inside the oven, the mould is revolved on two axis so the powdered polymer melts from the heat and layers the inside if the mold. The rotation is done gradually, about 20 revolutions per minute. The main thing that is critical at this moment is the amount of time the mold will spend inside the oven. If it stays to long, the product will lose value and strength, making a weak product. If it is taken out from the oven prematurely, the polymer will not have liquefied properly, which generates bubbles in the finalized product.

3. Mould cooling down.
When the product has sufficiently spent the enough of time in the oven, it is then extracted for cooling. This can be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which generates a cool mist. When the component cools, it reduces a little for ease of removal from the mould. This is yet another procedure that depends upon a lot on the ideal timing, since quick cooling reduces the material too fast, causing bending of the item.

4. The offloading or de-moulding phase.
As soon as the material inside te mold has cooled properly, the molder taking care of the process can then take out the finalized product from the mold. The procedure is repeated from the beginning, making a series of similar product lines.
