The Rotomolding Method in Detail

1. Mould preparation.
A predetermined quantity of polymer in grain form is filled into a hollow mould. The mold is usually made of cast aluminium or sheet steel material. The color desired for the finished goods is pre compounded into the polymer. The most often used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this style of plastic manufacturing.

Pre-heating of the oven follows, and it can be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is warmed to temperatures between 500-700F. The mould with the powdered polymer is then sealed and positioned into the oven.

2. The heating up and fusion step.
Once placed into the oven, the mold is spun on two axis so the powdered polymer liquefies from the heat and overlays the inside if the mould. The turning is done slowly, about 20 rotations per min. The main thing that is critical at this point is the amount of time the mold will spend within the oven. If it overstays, the component will lose stability and strength, creating a weak product. If it is taken out from the oven too early, the polymer will not have flowed correctly, which generates bubbles in the completed product.

3. Mould cooling down.
When the material has completely spent the enough of time in the oven, it is then removed for cooling. This may be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which a cool mist. When the material cools, it shrinks a little for ease of extraction from the mold. This is yet another measure that depends a lot on the right timing, since rapid cooling decreases the material too quickly, causing bending of the item.

4. The unloading or de-moulding step.
As soon as the product inside te mould has cooled successfully, the molder handling the procedure can then extract the completed item from the mold. The procedure is repeated from the beginning, making a series of identical product lines.
