The Rotomoulding Process in Detail

1. Mold prep work.
A predetermined measure of polymer in grain form is loaded into a hollow mold. The mould is usually made from cast aluminium or sheet steel component. 2. The heating and fusion step.
Once inside the oven, the mold is revolved on two axis so the powdered polymer liquefies from the heat and layers the inside if the mould. The turning is done slowly, about 20 rotations per sixty seconds. One thing that is essential at this point is the amount of time the mold will spend inside the oven. If it stays to long, the material will lose stability and durability, making a faulty product. If it is extracted from the oven prematurely, the polymer will not have flowed correctly, which produces bubbles in the finalized product.

3. Mould cooling.
When the material has sufficiently spent the correct amount of time in the oven, it is then extracted for cooling. This may be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which creates a cool mist. When the product cools, it shrinks slightly for ease of extraction from the mould. This is yet another measure that depends a lot on the right timing, since rapid cooling reduces the material too fast, causing bending of the material.

4. The unloading or de-molding phase.
As soon as the material within te mold has cooled adequately, the person handling the process can then take out the finished item from the mould. The process is repeated from the start, making a number of identical products.
