The Rotomolding Method in Detail

1. Mold readying.
A predetermined volume of polymer in particle form is filled into a hollow mould. The mould is usually made from cast aluminium or sheet steel substance. Preheating of the oven follows, and it can be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is heated up to temperatures between 500-700F. The mould with the powdered polymer is then locked and installed within the oven.

2. The heating and fusion phase.
Once placed into the oven, the mold is rotated on two axis so the powdered polymer melts from the heat and coats the inside if the mold. The turning is done slowly and gradually, about 20 spins per minute. One thing that is crucial at this moment is the amount of time the mold will spend within the oven. If it overstays, the material will lose value and strength, generating a faulty item. If it is extracted from the oven prematurely, the polymer will not have flowed properly, which generates bubbles in the finalized product.

3. Mould cooling.
When the product has completely spent the right amount of time in the oven, it is then taken out for cooling. This can be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which generates a cool mist. When the component cools, it shrinks slightly for ease of removal from the mould. This is another measure that depends upon a lot on the right timing, since rapid cooling reduces the material too rapidly, causing warping of the item.

4. The discharging or de-moulding step.
When the component within te mould has cooled correctly, the molder taking care of the process can then remove the finished item from the mold. The technique is repeated from the beginning, providing a series of identical product lines.
