The Rotomolding Method in Detail

This molding technique has been used since early times for creatingvseverl products. Egyptians for instance, used rotomoulding methods in the of ceramics. The process has however taken very long to take affect because it was considered as being a relatively slow-moving process

1. Mold prep work.
A fixed volume of polymer in particle form is loaded into a hollow mould. The mold is usually made from cast aluminium or sheet steel component. The coloration intended for the end product is pre compounded into the polymer. The most commonly used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this type of plastic manufacturing.

Preheating of the oven starts, and it can be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is heated up to temperatures between 500-700F. The mould with the powdered polymer is then locked and inserted within the oven.

2. The heating and fusion procedure.
Once within the oven, the mould is revolved on two axis so the powdered polymer liquefies from the heat and layers the inside if the mold. The spinning is done slowly, about 20 revolutions per min. One thing that is critical at this moment is the period of time the mould will spend inside the oven. If it stays to long, the component will lose value and strength, producing a weak product. If it is extracted from the oven prematurely, the polymer will not have liquefied properly, which generates bubbles in the finalized product line.

3. Mould cooling down.
When the component has sufficiently spent the right amount of time in the oven, it is then removed for cooling. This can be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which creates a cool mist. When the product cools, it shrinks somewhat for ease of extraction from the mould. This is yet another procedure that depends a lot on the right timing, since quick cooling decreases the material too rapidly, causing bending of the material.

4. The discharging or de-moulding phase.
As soon as the product within te mold has cooled effectively, the person taking care of the operation can then take out the finished item from the mold. The technique is repeated from the beginning, providing a number of identical products.
