The Rotomolding Method in Detail

1. Mold prep work.
A fixed amount of polymer in grain form is filled into a hollow mould. The mold is usually made of cast aluminium or sheet steel component. Preheating of the oven follows, and it can be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is warmed to temperatures between 500-700F. The mould with the powdered polymer is then secured and installed into the oven.

2. The heat and fusion process.
Once placed into the oven, the mold is turned on two axis so the powdered polymer melts from the heat and overlays the inside if the mold. The turning is done gradually, about 20 revolutions per minute. One thing that is vital at this point is the period of time the mould will spend inside the oven. If it stays to long, the material will lose stability and durability, producing a weak product. If it is taken out from the oven prematurely, the polymer will not have liquefied correctly, which creates bubbles in the finished product.

3. Mold cooling down.
When the material has completely spent the correct amount of time in the oven, it is then extracted for cooling. This can be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which a cool mist. When the product cools, it reduces a little for ease of extraction from the mold. This is another procedure that depends upon a lot on the right timing, since rapid cooling shrinks the material too quick, causing warping of the material.

4. The unloading or de-molding phase.
Once the component inside te mold has cooled effectively, the molder managing the procedure can then take out the finished item from the mould. The function is repeated from the beginning, providing a series of similar items.
