The Roto-Molding Process Components

1. Mold fitting.
A predetermined quantity of polymer in particle form is filled into a hollow mold. The mold is usually comprised of cast aluminium or sheet steel material. The most often used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this format of plastic engineering.

Pre-heating of the oven starts, and it can be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is heated to temperatures between 500-700F. The mold with the powdered polymer is then secured and positioned inside the oven.

2. The heat and fusion phase.
Once inside the oven, the mould is spun on two axis so the powdered polymer liquefies from the heat and coats the inside if the mould. The spinning is done gradually, about 20 rotations per minute. The main thing that is critical at this point is the period of time the mould will spend within the oven. If it overstays, the component will lose stability and strength, producing a poor item. If it is taken out from the oven too early, the polymer will not have liquefied correctly, which develops bubbles in the finalized item.

3. Mold cooling down.
When the product has completely spent the enough of time in the oven, it is then extracted for cooling. This may be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which creates a cool mist. When the product cools, it reduces a little for ease of removal from the mould. This is yet another measure that relies a lot on the correct timing, since quick cooling reduces the material too fast, causing warping of the item.

4. The removing or de-molding phase.
When the material inside te mould has cooled successfully, the person taking care of the procedure can then remove the finished product from the mould. The function is repeated from the beginning, supplying a series of exact products.
