The Roto-Molding Process Components

1. Mold preparation.
A predetermined volume of polymer in particle form is filled into a hollow mold. The mold is usually comprised of cast aluminium or sheet steel material. The colour preferred for the finished product is pre compounded into the polymer. The most generally used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this type of plastic production.

Preheating of the oven follows, and it may be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is heated up to temperatures between 500-700F. The mold with the powdered polymer is then locked and installed into the oven.

2. The heating and fusion process.
Once placed into the oven, the mould is rotated on two axis so the powdered polymer melts from the heat and coats the inside if the mold. The rotation is done gradually, about 20 rotations per minute. One thing that is vital at this point is the amount of time the mould will spend inside the oven. If it stays to long, the product will lose stability and strength, producing a weak item. If it is removed from the oven prematurely, the polymer will not have melted properly, which creates bubbles in the completed product.

3. Mould cooling.
When the component has sufficiently spent the right amount of time in the oven, it is then taken out for cooling. This may be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which creates a cool mist. When the material cools, it shrinks a little for ease of removal from the mold. This is an additional measure that depends upon a lot on the ideal timing, since rapid cooling reduces the material too rapidly, causing bending of the item.

4. The discharging or de-moulding step.
Once the product within te mould has cooled correctly, the molder taking care of the procedure can then extract the finished item from the mold. The procedure is repeated from the beginning, supplying a number of identical items.
