The Rotomoulding Method in Detail

1. Mould fitting.
A fixed quantity of polymer in grain form is packed into a hollow mould. The mould is usually constructed from cast aluminium or sheet steel material. The most generally used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this style of plastic engineering.

Preheating of the oven follows, and it can be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is warmed to temperatures between 500-700F. The mould with the powdered polymer is then sealed and installed within the oven.

2. The heating and fusion phase.
Once placed into the oven, the mold is spun on two axis so the powdered polymer liquefies from the heat and coats the inside if the mould. The spinning is done slowly, about 20 revolutions per sixty seconds. The main thing that is crucial at this moment is the amount of time the mould will spend inside the oven. If it stays to long, the material will lose stability and strength, producing a weak item. If it is extracted from the oven prematurely, the polymer will not have liquefied properly, which creates bubbles in the finished item.

3. Mould cooling.
When the product has completely spent the correct amount of time in the oven, it is then removed for cooling. This may be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which creates a cool mist. When the product cools, it shrinks somewhat for ease of removal from the mould. This is another step that relies a lot on the correct timing, since rapid cooling decreases the material too quickly, causing warping of the product.

4. The removing or de-moulding phase.
Once the product inside te mold has cooled correctly, the molder taking care of the process can then remove the completed product from the mold. The technique is repeated from the beginning, giving a series of exact items.
