The Rotomoulding Method in Detail

1. Mold prep work.
A predetermined volume of polymer in grain form is packed into a hollow mold. The mold is usually comprised of cast aluminium or sheet steel component. The colour preferred for the end item is pre compounded into the polymer. The most commonly used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this design of plastic assembly.

Pre-heating of the oven starts, and it can be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is warmed to temperatures between 500-700F. The mold with the powdered polymer is then sealed and placed into the oven.

2. The heating and fusion step.
Once placed into the oven, the mold is rotated on two axis so the powdered polymer melts from the heat and layers the inside if the mould. The rotation is done gradually, about 20 spins per minute. The main thing that is important at this point is the amount of time the mould will spend within the oven. If it overstays, the material will lose stability and durability, generating a weak product. If it is taken out from the oven prematurely, the polymer will not have liquefied correctly, which generates bubbles in the completed product.

3. Mould cooling.
When the material has completely spent the enough of time in the oven, it is then taken out for cooling. This can be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which generates a cool mist. When the component cools, it reduces slightly for ease of removal from the mold. This is another step that depends upon a lot on the ideal timing, since rapid cooling shrinks the material too quick, causing warping of the item.

4. The unloading or de-moulding phase.
When the product within te mold has cooled correctly, the person handling the procedure can then remove the completed product from the mould. The technique is repeated from the beginning, supplying a series of similar items.
