The Roto-Molding Method in Detail

1. Mold preparation.
A predetermined quantity of polymer in grain form is loaded into a hollow mould. The mold is usually made from cast aluminium or sheet steel component. The color tone needed for the finished product is pre compounded into the polymer. The most often used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this style of plastic production.

Preheating of the oven starts, and it may be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is heated up to temperatures between 500-700F. The mold with the powdered polymer is then secured and placed inside the oven.

2. The heating up and fusion phase.
Once inside the oven, the mold is turned on two axis so the powdered polymer liquefies from the heat and overlays the inside if the mold. The rotation is done slowly, about 20 spins per minute. One thing that is crucial at this moment is the amount of time the mold will spend within the oven. If it stays to long, the material will lose value and durability, making a poor product. If it is extracted from the oven too early, the polymer will not have melted correctly, which generates bubbles in the finalized product.

3. Mould cooling down.
When the material has sufficiently spent the correct amount of time in the oven, it is then extracted for cooling. This can be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which creates a cool mist. When the product cools, it shrinks somewhat for ease of extraction from the mold. This is yet another measure that depends upon a lot on the ideal timing, since rapid cooling reduces the material too rapidly, causing bending of the material.

4. The unloading or de-molding step.
When the material inside te mold has cooled properly, the person taking care of the process can then extract the completed item from the mold. The function is repeated from the beginning, providing a series of identical products.
