The Roto-Molding Method in Detail

1. Mold readying.
A fixed quantity of polymer in particle form is loaded into a hollow mold. The mould is usually constructed from cast aluminium or sheet steel component. The coloration desired for the end goods is pre compounded into the polymer. The most commonly used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this format of plastic production.

Pre-heating of the oven follows, and it can be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is warmed to temperatures between 500-700F. The mold with the powdered polymer is then sealed and positioned into the oven.

2. The heat and fusion step.
Once placed into the oven, the mold is rotated on two axis so the powdered polymer melts from the heat and overlays the inside if the mold. The rotation is done slowly, about 20 revolutions per minute. The main thing that is vital at this moment is the amount of time the mold will spend inside the oven. If it stays to long, the product will lose stability and strength, creating a poor item. If it is removed from the oven prematurely, the polymer will not have flowed properly, which develops bubbles in the finalized item.

3. Mould cooling.
When the product has sufficiently spent the correct amount of time in the oven, it is then taken out for cooling. This may be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which generates a cool mist. When the product cools, it shrinks somewhat for ease of removal from the mould. This is another procedure that depends a lot on the ideal timing, since rapid cooling decreases the material too rapidly, causing bending of the item.

4. The un-loading or de-molding phase.
When the component inside te mould has cooled correctly, the person managing the process can then extract the finished item from the mould. The technique is repeated from the beginning, supplying a series of exact items.
