The Rotomolding Method in Detail

1. Mold prep work.
A predetermined amount of polymer in particle form is packed into a hollow mould. The mold is usually composeded of cast aluminium or sheet steel substance. The coloring chosen for the final product is pre compounded into the polymer. The most commonly used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this design of plastic assembly.

Pre-heating of the oven starts, and it may be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is heated to temperatures between 500-700F. The mold with the powdered polymer is then secured and installed inside the oven.

2. The heating up and fusion procedure.
Once within the oven, the mold is revolved on two axis so the powdered polymer liquefies from the heat and layers the inside if the mold. The turning is done slowly and gradually, about 20 rotations per minute. The main thing that is crucial at this point is the period of time the mold will spend inside the oven. If it stays to long, the product will lose stability and strength, producing a poor product. If it is taken out from the oven prematurely, the polymer will not have melted correctly, which creates bubbles in the completed product.

3. Mould cooling.
When the component has sufficiently spent the right amount of time in the oven, it is then removed for cooling. This may be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which creates a cool mist. When the material cools, it shrinks a little for ease of removal from the mould. This is yet another procedure that depends upon a lot on the correct timing, since rapid cooling reduces the material too fast, causing warping of the item.

4. The un-loading or de-molding phase.
Once the material inside te mould has cooled adequately, the molder handling the procedure can then remove the completed item from the mould. The procedure is repeated from the beginning, making a series of identical product lines.
