The Rotomoulding Method in Detail

This moulding procedure has been used since early times for creatingvseverl product lines. Egyptians for instance, employed roto-molding procedures in the making of ceramics. 1. Mold readying.
A predetermined quantity of polymer in particle form is loaded into a hollow mould. The mould is usually composeded of cast aluminium or sheet steel material. The coloring preferred for the final goods is pre compounded into the polymer. The most commonly used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this format of plastic manufacturing.

Preheating of the oven follows, and it may be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is heated up to temperatures between 500-700F. The mould with the powdered polymer is then sealed and placed inside the oven.

2. The heating and fusion procedure.
Once placed into the oven, the mould is turned on two axis so the powdered polymer liquefies from the heat and coats the inside if the mold. The turning is done slowly, about 20 rotations per sixty seconds. One thing that is crucial at this moment is the period of time the mold will spend inside the oven. If it stays to long, the component will lose value and durability, producing a weak item. If it is taken out from the oven too early, the polymer will not have melted properly, which generates bubbles in the finished item.

3. Mould cooling.
When the product has sufficiently spent the right amount of time in the oven, it is then removed for cooling. This may be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which a cool mist. When the product cools, it reduces somewhat for ease of extraction from the mold. This is one more measure that depends a lot on the right timing, since rapid cooling shrinks the material too rapidly, causing bending of the material.

4. The un-loading or de-moulding step.
As soon as the material within te mold has cooled successfully, the molder handling the procedure can then remove the completed item from the mold. The process is repeated from the beginning, making a number of similar items.
