The Rotomolding Process in Detail

1. Mold prep work.
A predetermined measure of polymer in powder form is packed into a hollow mold. The mould is usually crafted from cast aluminium or sheet steel component. The color intended for the end product is pre compounded into the polymer. The most typically used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this design of plastic engineering.

Preheating of the oven follows, and it can be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is warmed to temperatures between 500-700F. The mould with the powdered polymer is then sealed and placed within the oven.

2. The heating and fusion phase.
Once placed into the oven, the mold is revolved on two axis so the powdered polymer liquefies from the heat and layers the inside if the mould. The turning is done slowly and gradually, about 20 rotations per min. The main thing that is critical at this point is the amount of time the mould will spend within the oven. If it stays to long, the component will lose value and strength, generating a weak item. If it is taken out from the oven too early, the polymer will not have melted correctly, which creates bubbles in the completed item.

3. Mold cooling.
When the component has completely spent the enough of time in the oven, it is then extracted for cooling. This can be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which creates a cool mist. When the material cools, it shrinks slightly for ease of removal from the mould. This is one more step that depends a lot on the right timing, since quick cooling decreases the material too quick, causing bending of the item.

4. The discharging or de-molding phase.
As soon as the product within te mould has cooled successfully, the molder managing the operation can then extract the completed product from the mold. The process is repeated from the start, giving a number of identical items.
