The Rotomolding Method in Detail

1. Mold prep work.
A predetermined volume of polymer in powder form is loaded into a hollow mold. The mold is usually made from cast aluminium or sheet steel material. The most generally used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this style of plastic production.

Pre-heating of the oven starts, and it may be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is warmed to temperatures between 500-700F. The mould with the powdered polymer is then secured and inserted inside the oven.

2. The heating and fusion process.
Once placed into the oven, the mold is turned on two axis so the powdered polymer melts from the heat and coats the inside if the mold. The turning is done slowly and gradually, about 20 revolutions per sixty seconds. One thing that is vital at this moment is the period of time the mould will spend within the oven. If it stays to long, the product will lose stability and durability, making a weak product. If it is removed from the oven prematurely, the polymer will not have liquefied correctly, which produces bubbles in the finalized item.

3. Mold cooling down.
When the product has completely spent the enough of time in the oven, it is then taken out for cooling. This may be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which a cool mist. When the component cools, it reduces a little for ease of extraction from the mold. This is an additional procedure that depends upon a lot on the correct timing, since rapid cooling reduces the material too fast, causing warping of the product.

4. The un-loading or de-molding step.
Once the component within te mold has cooled properly, the molder handling the process can then take out the completed product from the mould. The technique is repeated from the start, giving a series of identical product lines.
