The Roto-Molding Process in Detail

1. Mould preparation.
A predetermined quantity of polymer in powder form is packed into a hollow mold. The mold is usually crafted from cast aluminium or sheet steel component. The color tone desired for the end item is pre compounded into the polymer. The most generally used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this format of plastic engineering.

Preheating of the oven follows, and it may be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is heated to temperatures between 500-700F. The mould with the powdered polymer is then locked and inserted inside the oven.

2. The heating and fusion procedure.
Once inside the oven, the mould is revolved on two axis so the powdered polymer melts from the heat and overlays the inside if the mold. The turning is done gradually, about 20 spins per minute. Something that is critical at this moment is the amount of time the mould will spend inside the oven. If it overstays, the product will lose value and durability, producing a weak item. If it is extracted from the oven prematurely, the polymer will not have flowed correctly, which generates bubbles in the finalized product.

3. Mold cooling.
When the material has completely spent the correct amount of time in the oven, it is then removed for cooling. This may be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which creates a cool mist. When the product cools, it reduces a little for ease of removal from the mould. This is yet another procedure that depends a lot on the correct timing, since quick cooling reduces the material too fast, causing bending of the material.

4. The unloading or de-moulding step.
Once the component inside te mould has cooled effectively, the person taking care of the procedure can then remove the finished item from the mould. The process is repeated from the start, giving a series of identical product lines.
