The Rotomolding Method in Detail

1. Mould fitting.
A predetermined quantity of polymer in grain form is loaded into a hollow mold. The mould is usually made from cast aluminium or sheet steel substance. Preheating of the oven starts, and it may be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is heated to temperatures between 500-700F. The mould with the powdered polymer is then secured and installed inside the oven.

2. The heating and fusion procedure.
Once within the oven, the mold is revolved on two axis so the powdered polymer liquefies from the heat and coats the inside if the mold. The turning is done slowly and gradually, about 20 rotations per min. The main thing that is important at this moment is the period of time the mould will spend inside the oven. If it stays to long, the product will lose value and durability, generating a faulty product. If it is taken out from the oven too early, the polymer will not have liquefied correctly, which generates bubbles in the completed item.

3. Mould cooling.
When the material has completely spent the enough of time in the oven, it is then removed for cooling. This may be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which generates a cool mist. When the product cools, it shrinks a little for ease of extraction from the mould. This is yet another measure that depends upon a lot on the right timing, since quick cooling decreases the material too quickly, causing bending of the material.

4. The unloading or de-molding step.
When the material inside te mold has cooled adequately, the molder taking care of the operation can then take out the completed product from the mold. The function is repeated from the beginning, making a number of exact product lines.
