The Rotomoulding Process in Detail

1. Mould preparation.

Pre-heating of the oven follows, and it may be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is warmed to temperatures between 500-700F. The mold with the powdered polymer is then secured and put within the oven.

2. The heating and fusion procedure.
Once within the oven, the mold is turned on two axis so the powdered polymer melts from the heat and overlays the inside if the mould. The spinning is done slowly, about 20 revolutions per sixty seconds. The main thing that is vital at this moment is the period of time the mould will spend within the oven. If it stays to long, the product will lose stability and strength, creating a weak product. If it is taken out from the oven prematurely, the polymer will not have flowed properly, which produces bubbles in the completed product line.

3. Mold cooling down.
When the component has sufficiently spent the correct amount of time in the oven, it is then extracted for cooling. This may be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which a cool mist. When the product cools, it reduces slightly for ease of extraction from the mold. This is yet another measure that depends a lot on the ideal timing, since rapid cooling shrinks the material too fast, causing bending of the item.

4. The unloading or de-moulding phase.
When the material inside te mould has cooled properly, the molder handling the operation can then remove the finished item from the mold. The procedure is repeated from the beginning, giving a series of exact products.
