The Rotomolding Process in Detail

1. Mould preparation.
A predetermined amount of polymer in particle form is loaded into a hollow mould. The mold is usually made of cast aluminium or sheet steel component. The colour chosen for the final item is pre compounded into the polymer. The most generally used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this type of plastic assembly.

Pre-heating of the oven follows, and it can be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is heated to temperatures between 500-700F. The mould with the powdered polymer is then secured and put within the oven.

2. The heating and fusion process.
Once within the oven, the mould is revolved on two axis so the powdered polymer liquefies from the heat and overlays the inside if the mould. The spinning is done slowly, about 20 spins per sixty seconds. Something that is crucial at this moment is the period of time the mold will spend inside the oven. If it overstays, the component will lose stability and strength, producing a poor item. If it is removed from the oven prematurely, the polymer will not have melted properly, which generates bubbles in the finalized product line.

3. Mould cooling.
When the material has completely spent the enough of time in the oven, it is then extracted for cooling. This can be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which a cool mist. When the component cools, it shrinks a little for ease of extraction from the mold. This is yet another procedure that depends upon a lot on the right timing, since quick cooling shrinks the material too fast, causing warping of the material.

4. The removing or de-molding step.
When the component inside te mould has cooled effectively, the person handling the process can then take out the completed item from the mold. The procedure is repeated from the beginning, making a series of exact items.
