The Rotomolding Process Components

1. Mould prep work.
A fixed amount of polymer in powder form is packed into a hollow mould. The mould is usually made from cast aluminium or sheet steel component. The color desired for the end goods is pre compounded into the polymer. The most generally used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this type of plastic manufacturing.

Preheating of the oven follows, and it may be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is heated to temperatures between 500-700F. The mold with the powdered polymer is then secured and inserted inside the oven.

2. The heating and fusion phase.
Once placed into the oven, the mould is spun on two axis so the powdered polymer liquefies from the heat and overlays the inside if the mold. The rotation is done slowly, about 20 rotations per minute. Something that is crucial at this moment is the amount of time the mold will spend within the oven. If it stays to long, the product will lose value and durability, generating a weak item. If it is taken out from the oven prematurely, the polymer will not have flowed correctly, which produces bubbles in the completed item.

3. Mould cooling down.
When the component has completely spent the correct amount of time in the oven, it is then taken out for cooling. This can be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which a cool mist. When the material cools, it reduces a little for ease of extraction from the mold. This is an additional step that depends a lot on the ideal timing, since rapid cooling reduces the material too rapidly, causing bending of the product.

4. The removing or de-moulding step.
When the material inside te mould has cooled effectively, the molder taking care of the operation can then extract the finished item from the mould. The technique is repeated from the beginning, giving a number of identical items.
