The Rotomoulding Procedure in Detail

1. Mould prep work.
A predetermined measure of polymer in powder form is loaded into a hollow mould. The mold is usually crafted from cast aluminium or sheet steel material. The color tone needed for the end goods is pre compounded into the polymer. The most commonly used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this style of plastic assembly.

Preheating of the oven starts, and it may be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is warmed to temperatures between 500-700F. The mold with the powdered polymer is then locked and installed inside the oven.

2. The heating and fusion procedure.
Once within the oven, the mould is revolved on two axis so the powdered polymer liquefies from the heat and coats the inside if the mold. The turning is done gradually, about 20 spins per min. Something that is critical at this moment is the period of time the mold will spend inside the oven. If it overstays, the product will lose value and strength, producing a faulty item. If it is taken out from the oven too early, the polymer will not have liquefied properly, which generates bubbles in the finished item.

3. Mould cooling down.
When the product has completely spent the right amount of time in the oven, it is then extracted for cooling. This may be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which generates a cool mist. When the product cools, it shrinks a little for ease of removal from the mold. This is another step that depends a lot on the ideal timing, since quick cooling shrinks the material too quickly, causing bending of the product.

4. The offloading or de-molding phase.
As soon as the component inside te mold has cooled successfully, the molder handling the procedure can then remove the finalized product from the mold. The function is repeated from the beginning, providing a series of identical product lines.
