The Rotomoulding Process Components

1. Mold prep work.
A predetermined volume of polymer in powder form is packed into a hollow mold. The mold is usually crafted from cast aluminium or sheet steel material. The most often used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this format of plastic production.

Pre-heating of the oven starts, and it can be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is heated up to temperatures between 500-700F. The mould with the powdered polymer is then locked and installed inside the oven.

2. The heating up and fusion step.
Once within the oven, the mould is spun on two axis so the powdered polymer liquefies from the heat and coats the inside if the mold. The rotation is done gradually, about 20 revolutions per minute. One thing that is crucial at this point is the period of time the mould will spend inside the oven. If it stays to long, the component will lose value and strength, generating a poor product. If it is extracted from the oven prematurely, the polymer will not have melted correctly, which produces bubbles in the completed product.

3. Mould cooling down.
When the component has completely spent the right amount of time in the oven, it is then removed for cooling. This can be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which a cool mist. When the product cools, it reduces somewhat for ease of removal from the mold. This is another measure that relies a lot on the correct timing, since quick cooling decreases the material too rapidly, causing bending of the material.

4. The unloading or de-molding step.
As soon as the component within te mold has cooled effectively, the molder handling the operation can then take out the completed item from the mould. The technique is repeated from the start, providing a number of similar product lines.
