The Rotomoulding Process in Detail

1. Mould prep work.

Preheating of the oven starts, and it can be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is heated to temperatures between 500-700F. The mold with the powdered polymer is then locked and positioned into the oven.

2. The heat and fusion phase.
Once within the oven, the mould is rotated on two axis so the powdered polymer liquefies from the heat and overlays the inside if the mold. The spinning is done slowly, about 20 rotations per minute. One thing that is critical at this point is the amount of time the mould will spend within the oven. If it overstays, the material will lose value and strength, creating a weak product. If it is removed from the oven too early, the polymer will not have liquefied correctly, which develops bubbles in the completed product.

3. Mold cooling.
When the material has sufficiently spent the right amount of time in the oven, it is then extracted for cooling. This can be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which creates a cool mist. When the material cools, it reduces somewhat for ease of removal from the mold. This is yet another measure that depends upon a lot on the ideal timing, since rapid cooling reduces the material too rapidly, causing warping of the item.

4. The removing or de-moulding step.
When the product within te mould has cooled properly, the molder handling the procedure can then take out the finalized product from the mold. The procedure is repeated from the beginning, giving a number of similar product lines.
