The Rotomolding Procedure in Detail

1. Mould fitting.
A fixed amount of polymer in particle form is filled into a hollow mold. The mold is usually constructed from cast aluminium or sheet steel component. The most commonly used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this format of plastic engineering.

Preheating of the oven starts, and it may be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is heated up to temperatures between 500-700F. The mold with the powdered polymer is then secured and placed into the oven.

2. The heating and fusion process.
Once placed into the oven, the mold is rotated on two axis so the powdered polymer melts from the heat and coats the inside if the mould. The turning is done slowly, about 20 revolutions per sixty seconds. One thing that is important at this moment is the amount of time the mould will spend inside the oven. If it stays to long, the component will lose stability and strength, making a faulty product. If it is removed from the oven too early, the polymer will not have flowed properly, which generates bubbles in the finished product line.

3. Mould cooling down.
When the material has completely spent the enough of time in the oven, it is then extracted for cooling. This may be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which a cool mist. When the component cools, it reduces a little for ease of extraction from the mold. This is another measure that depends a lot on the ideal timing, since rapid cooling reduces the material too fast, causing warping of the product.

4. The unloading or de-molding phase.
Once the material within te mold has cooled correctly, the person taking care of the operation can then extract the finalized item from the mold. The technique is repeated from the beginning, giving a number of identical products.
