The Rotomolding Procedure in Detail

1. Mould readying.
A fixed quantity of polymer in grain form is loaded into a hollow mold. The mold is usually composeded of cast aluminium or sheet steel component. The coloration desired for the final product is pre compounded into the polymer. The most generally used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this design of plastic assembly.

Pre-heating of the oven follows, and it can be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is heated up to temperatures between 500-700F. The mold with the powdered polymer is then secured and positioned within the oven.

2. The heat and fusion procedure.
Once inside the oven, the mold is rotated on two axis so the powdered polymer melts from the heat and layers the inside if the mold. The rotation is done slowly and gradually, about 20 revolutions per minute. One thing that is essential at this point is the amount of time the mold will spend within the oven. If it overstays, the product will lose stability and strength, generating a weak item. If it is taken out from the oven too early, the polymer will not have liquefied properly, which produces bubbles in the finished product.

3. Mould cooling.
When the component has sufficiently spent the correct amount of time in the oven, it is then removed for cooling. This may be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which creates a cool mist. When the product cools, it reduces a little for ease of removal from the mould. This is yet another measure that depends a lot on the correct timing, since rapid cooling reduces the material too rapidly, causing bending of the material.

4. The unloading or de-moulding phase.
As soon as the material inside te mould has cooled successfully, the person taking care of the process can then remove the finished product from the mold. The function is repeated from the beginning, giving a number of exact items.
