The Rotomolding Procedure in Detail

1. Mold preparation.
A fixed volume of polymer in particle form is filled into a hollow mould. The mold is usually built from cast aluminium or sheet steel material. The colour needed for the end goods is pre compounded into the polymer. The most generally used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this type of plastic assembly.

Pre-heating of the oven follows, and it can be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is heated to temperatures between 500-700F. The mould with the powdered polymer is then locked and installed within the oven.

2. The heating and fusion process.
Once inside the oven, the mould is revolved on two axis so the powdered polymer melts from the heat and coats the inside if the mould. The turning is done slowly and gradually, about 20 revolutions per minute. The main thing that is vital at this moment is the amount of time the mould will spend within the oven. If it stays to long, the product will lose stability and strength, producing a faulty item. If it is removed from the oven prematurely, the polymer will not have flowed correctly, which produces bubbles in the finished item.

3. Mould cooling.
When the product has completely spent the right amount of time in the oven, it is then taken out for cooling. This can be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which a cool mist. When the product cools, it reduces slightly for ease of removal from the mould. This is one more step that depends a lot on the correct timing, since rapid cooling reduces the material too quickly, causing bending of the item.

4. The removing or de-moulding phase.
When the material inside te mould has cooled successfully, the person taking care of the operation can then take out the finished item from the mould. The process is repeated from the beginning, providing a series of exact items.
