The Roto-Molding Process in Detail

This molding technique has been used since ancient times for creatingvseverl items. Egyptians for example, applied roto-molding procedures in the of ceramics. 1. Mold preparation.
A predetermined volume of polymer in particle form is loaded into a hollow mold. The mould is usually made of cast aluminium or sheet steel component. The color tone wanted for the final item is pre compounded into the polymer. The most generally used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this style of plastic production.

Preheating of the oven follows, and it can be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is warmed to temperatures between 500-700F. The mould with the powdered polymer is then locked and installed within the oven.

2. The heat and fusion step.
Once placed into the oven, the mold is rotated on two axis so the powdered polymer melts from the heat and overlays the inside if the mold. The spinning is done gradually, about 20 revolutions per minute. Something that is important at this point is the amount of time the mold will spend within the oven. If it overstays, the component will lose value and durability, creating a weak product. If it is extracted from the oven prematurely, the polymer will not have melted correctly, which develops bubbles in the finished product.

3. Mold cooling down.
When the product has completely spent the enough of time in the oven, it is then extracted for cooling. This can be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which creates a cool mist. When the material cools, it reduces a little for ease of removal from the mold. This is another measure that depends a lot on the right timing, since quick cooling reduces the material too quick, causing bending of the product.

4. The offloading or de-molding phase.
When the product within te mould has cooled adequately, the molder managing the procedure can then extract the finalized item from the mold. The technique is repeated from the start, making a number of identical product lines.
