The Rotomolding Procedure in Detail

1. Mold preparation.
A fixed volume of polymer in powder form is packed into a hollow mold. The mould is usually made from cast aluminium or sheet steel component. The coloration needed for the finished product is pre compounded into the polymer. The most commonly used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this type of plastic production.

Preheating of the oven starts, and it may be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is warmed to temperatures between 500-700F. The mould with the powdered polymer is then secured and placed within the oven.

2. The heating and fusion phase.
Once inside the oven, the mould is rotated on two axis so the powdered polymer liquefies from the heat and coats the inside if the mold. The turning is done gradually, about 20 revolutions per minute. The main thing that is critical at this moment is the period of time the mould will spend inside the oven. If it overstays, the material will lose stability and strength, producing a poor item. If it is taken out from the oven too early, the polymer will not have melted correctly, which generates bubbles in the finished product line.

3. Mold cooling down.
When the component has completely spent the enough of time in the oven, it is then taken out for cooling. This can be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which a cool mist. When the component cools, it shrinks a little for ease of removal from the mold. This is one more step that depends a lot on the correct timing, since quick cooling decreases the material too rapidly, causing bending of the item.

4. The removing or de-molding step.
As soon as the material within te mold has cooled effectively, the person managing the procedure can then extract the finished item from the mold. The procedure is repeated from the start, supplying a number of similar product lines.
