The Rotomoulding Procedure in Detail

This moulding system has been used since early times for creatingvseverl items. Egyptians as an example, applied rotational molding systems in the making of ceramics. The Swiss were also making use of this rotation approach to make hollow chocolate eggs. Some plastic products in the USA were created using this procedure some time between 1940 and 1950. The procedure has however taken long to catch on because it was considered as being a very slow process

1. Mold fitting.
A predetermined measure of polymer in grain form is filled into a hollow mold. The mould is usually constructed from cast aluminium or sheet steel component. The coloring preferred for the end item is pre compounded into the polymer. The most commonly used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this style of plastic assembly.

Preheating of the oven starts, and it may be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is heated up to temperatures between 500-700F. The mold with the powdered polymer is then secured and inserted inside the oven.

2. The heating and fusion step.
Once inside the oven, the mould is turned on two axis so the powdered polymer melts from the heat and coats the inside if the mould. The turning is done slowly, about 20 revolutions per minute. Something that is essential at this moment is the period of time the mould will spend inside the oven. If it overstays, the product will lose value and durability, creating a poor product. If it is extracted from the oven prematurely, the polymer will not have liquefied properly, which develops bubbles in the finalized product.

3. Mould cooling down.
When the component has sufficiently spent the enough of time in the oven, it is then removed for cooling. This can be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which a cool mist. When the material cools, it reduces somewhat for ease of removal from the mould. This is an additional step that depends a lot on the right timing, since rapid cooling shrinks the material too quick, causing warping of the item.

4. The removing or de-moulding step.
As soon as the material inside te mould has cooled effectively, the molder taking care of the operation can then extract the completed item from the mold. The process is repeated from the beginning, making a series of similar product lines.
