The Rotomolding Method in Detail

1. Mould fitting.

Pre-heating of the oven follows, and it can be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is warmed to temperatures between 500-700F. The mold with the powdered polymer is then sealed and put into the oven.

2. The heating and fusion process.
Once placed into the oven, the mould is spun on two axis so the powdered polymer melts from the heat and coats the inside if the mould. The rotation is done gradually, about 20 revolutions per minute. Something that is crucial at this point is the amount of time the mold will spend inside the oven. If it stays to long, the component will lose stability and durability, creating a weak product. If it is removed from the oven prematurely, the polymer will not have melted properly, which generates bubbles in the finished product.

3. Mold cooling down.
When the component has sufficiently spent the right amount of time in the oven, it is then extracted for cooling. This may be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which a cool mist. When the material cools, it shrinks somewhat for ease of removal from the mold. This is an additional measure that depends upon a lot on the correct timing, since quick cooling reduces the material too rapidly, causing warping of the product.

4. The removing or de-moulding step.
Once the component within te mould has cooled effectively, the person handling the process can then take out the completed product from the mould. The procedure is repeated from the beginning, giving a number of identical product lines.
