The Rotomoulding Process in Detail

1. Mold preparation.
A predetermined measure of polymer in grain form is filled into a hollow mold. The mold is usually crafted from cast aluminium or sheet steel material. The coloration needed for the end item is pre compounded into the polymer. The most generally used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this style of plastic engineering.

Pre-heating of the oven follows, and it can be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is heated up to temperatures between 500-700F. The mould with the powdered polymer is then sealed and put inside the oven.

2. The heating up and fusion phase.
Once inside the oven, the mould is spun on two axis so the powdered polymer liquefies from the heat and layers the inside if the mold. The rotation is done slowly, about 20 rotations per minute. The main thing that is crucial at this point is the amount of time the mould will spend inside the oven. If it stays to long, the product will lose value and durability, generating a weak item. If it is extracted from the oven prematurely, the polymer will not have liquefied properly, which develops bubbles in the completed product.

3. Mould cooling down.
When the product has completely spent the enough of time in the oven, it is then taken out for cooling. This can be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which a cool mist. When the component cools, it shrinks a little for ease of removal from the mould. This is another procedure that depends upon a lot on the right timing, since quick cooling decreases the material too quick, causing bending of the material.

4. The unloading or de-moulding phase.
Once the product within te mould has cooled correctly, the person handling the process can then remove the finalized product from the mold. The function is repeated from the start, giving a series of exact products.
