The Rotomolding Method in Detail

This moulding process has been used since ancient times for creatingvseverl items. Egyptians for instance, employed rotocasting techniques in the manufacturing of ceramics. 1. Mold prep work.
A fixed measure of polymer in powder form is filled into a hollow mold. The mould is usually composeded of cast aluminium or sheet steel material. The colour needed for the finished product is pre compounded into the polymer. The most generally used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this style of plastic production.

Preheating of the oven follows, and it may be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is heated up to temperatures between 500-700F. The mold with the powdered polymer is then sealed and placed within the oven.

2. The heating and fusion phase.
Once within the oven, the mould is rotated on two axis so the powdered polymer liquefies from the heat and overlays the inside if the mold. The rotation is done slowly and gradually, about 20 spins per sixty seconds. The main thing that is essential at this moment is the amount of time the mould will spend inside the oven. If it stays to long, the material will lose stability and durability, making a poor product. If it is extracted from the oven prematurely, the polymer will not have liquefied properly, which creates bubbles in the completed product line.

3. Mould cooling.
When the component has sufficiently spent the correct amount of time in the oven, it is then extracted for cooling. This can be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which generates a cool mist. When the product cools, it shrinks a little for ease of removal from the mold. This is yet another measure that depends a lot on the correct timing, since rapid cooling shrinks the material too quick, causing warping of the product.

4. The removing or de-moulding phase.
When the product inside te mould has cooled properly, the molder managing the procedure can then remove the finalized product from the mold. The process is repeated from the beginning, making a series of identical items.
