The Rotomoulding Process Components

1. Mold preparation.
A predetermined measure of polymer in particle form is packed into a hollow mould. The mold is usually constructed from cast aluminium or sheet steel material. The most often used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this format of plastic manufacturing.

Pre-heating of the oven follows, and it can be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is warmed to temperatures between 500-700F. The mould with the powdered polymer is then sealed and positioned inside the oven.

2. The heating up and fusion phase.
Once placed into the oven, the mold is spun on two axis so the powdered polymer melts from the heat and overlays the inside if the mold. The turning is done gradually, about 20 rotations per sixty seconds. Something that is vital at this point is the period of time the mould will spend inside the oven. If it stays to long, the product will lose value and durability, making a weak item. If it is extracted from the oven prematurely, the polymer will not have melted correctly, which creates bubbles in the finalized product.

3. Mold cooling down.
When the product has sufficiently spent the correct amount of time in the oven, it is then extracted for cooling. This can be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which creates a cool mist. When the product cools, it reduces somewhat for ease of extraction from the mould. This is another step that depends a lot on the correct timing, since quick cooling decreases the material too rapidly, causing bending of the material.

4. The unloading or de-molding step.
When the component within te mould has cooled properly, the molder taking care of the procedure can then take out the finalized item from the mould. The procedure is repeated from the beginning, providing a series of exact items.
